Nixon Academy Demo
Nixon Demo: May 31st
The 6th grade kids were particularly excited regarding the roach bots, enjoying their brief, but stimulating experience, however there was a lack of questions, and a bit of time issues that prevented from us being able to reach out to all the kids. There was a combining of a group which came about due to an over lapse which might be preventable next time. Otherwise, we were able to manage the large amount of children in each group, with Sofia handling explanations regarding VEX and the VEX robots (the competition robot and squarebot) and Tony and Proud handling the field and the research aspect of FLL, respectively. Nixon was fairly large, however classrooms were hard to utilize due to the presence of desks. If possible, inquiry regarding usage of MPR would be beneficial.
People who went:
Tony Ngo
Proud Heng
Moses Won
Sofia Dhanani
Teacher advisor: Ms. Bradshaw.
Schedule
1:05 P.M.: Leave
1: 15-20 P.M: Arrive (Depending on traffic)
1:20: Unpack, and start entering school
1:30-2:00: Set-up
2:00-3:15: Demo
3:15-3:45: Pack Up
3:45-4:00: School Pick Up.
Demo Plan:
Introduction: Where we are from? Who we are? What we do? Talk about FLL, FTC, VEX.
Rotational System, with stations as follows:
1). Roach bots
2). Squarebots
3). Competition robot VEX
4). Competition robots FLL
What to fix next time:
1. Robot Function
-Squarebots did not work, unable for kids to play with VEX robots
-Roachbot sensors: touch sensors, and ultrasonic were the primary drivers of changes in movement, a bit too fast as well for robot’s light sensors to react.
2. Preparation
-Roachbots were sort of last minute, a good template for b/p would be would be nice, and maybe a way to allow accommodate a group of 10 children or larger
-Checkups on all robots and inventory, there was a little mishap where we mistakenly thought we lost a VEX crystal, and Squarebots did not function
-Verify that table does not get dents
-Verify that space is adequate, checkup of school grounds and possible setup in advance a good thing to do, now that we have been there once
-Maybe a FAQ + small and simple RoboCamp pamphlet (with the team website/s-previous ones as well) would do nicely, one we can pass out to the kids, unlike the sign up forms that we so try to conserve
