Finding a Problem
In August, we gathered as much general information as we could to help benefit us in the future. First, we created a list of topics that may have problems in them for senior citizens. We researched general information, problems, and current solutions for each topic. The topics we came up with are below
1) Transportation
2) Medication 3) Deteriorating Health 4) Financial Capacity 5) Worthlessness 6) Lack of Senses |
7) Nutrition
8) Substance Abuse 9) Loss of Independence 10) Adjustment to Technology 11) Boredom 12) Non-Productivity |
13) Fear/Depression
14) Senility 15) Isolation (Social life) 16) Lack of shelter 17) Malnutrition |
Once we were done with that, we chose 3 topics that we wanted to look more in depth to. We wanted to have one topic to focus on this year and two other ones as back up topics in case our first choice failed. With that we wanted to start specifying our list. So, we divided each of the three topics into 3 sub-categories.
1. Transportation:
|
2. Lack of Senses:
|
3. Physical & Mental Health:
|
Each person on the team then looked up major problems of those three sub-categories and information about the current solutions for them.
We also created a list of contacts we could keep in touch with to find more information about our three topics. We do have the Cerritos Senior Center as one of our contacts. We asked for their opinion and other information on August 30 with a set of interview questions we came up with.

We also have Mrs. Breusch, our mentor, as a senior partner. With her input and advice, we were able to narrow our topics down to the following:
So in the end, we went with the topic of FALLING:

- From the three topics above, we chose Transportation
- From the three topics in Transportation, we chose Mobility
- From Mobility, we've decided to focus on falling
So in the end, we went with the topic of FALLING:
- This topic is pretty open ended, and you can see throughout our ideas and solutions the ways that we've went to interpret the topic.
